New Workplace Charter launches to help businesses recognise and respond to domestic abuse

A new Workplace Charter on Domestic Abuse has been launched today, urging employers across the region to recognise domestic abuse as a workplace issue, and to commit to practical training for teams, resulting in support for affected colleagues.
Developed by Women's Aid Domestic Abuse Specialists, the Workplace Charter delivers assessment, policy, training, recognition and accountability, bringing about a sustainable, informed and compassionate response to domestic abuse across the organisation.
Gillian Robinson, Women’s Aid CEO, explains; “Domestic abuse is not confined to the home, it follows victims into the workplace which impacts safety, wellbeing, attendance and performance.
“The Workplace Charter represents a critical step in extending protection and support beyond frontline services, and into everyday life, fostering a workplace culture where employees feel safe to seek help, and where they know supportive policies and procedures will be in place.
“We are calling on businesses of all sizes and sectors across Northern Ireland to sign up to the Charter and demonstrate clear leadership on this very important issue.”
In Northern Ireland, it is estimated the cost of domestic abuse to services and the economy is around £931 million. Employees experiencing abuse are more likely to have increased absenteeism, reduced productivity and job instability. In some cases, perpetrators may also target victims at work, creating safety risks and disruption.
Gillian continued; “For businesses, this can turn into real costs from loss of working days to increased staff turnover, reduced morale and lower productivity, all of which will affect their bottom line.
“The launch of the Workplace Charter follows the landmark employment law, The Domestic Abuse (Safe Leave) Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, entitling workers experiencing domestic abuse to at least 10 days of paid leave each year. However, specific regulations to enforce and operationalise the Act have yet to take full effect here.
“Organisations that take proactive steps to support employees see improved retention, stronger engagement and enhanced reputation as responsible employers.”

I was looking up the value of a rare coin I found in my couch cushions and clicked a broken image link on a collector's site. I just wanted a quick price check, but the image server was completely down. The redirect brought me to a page with bongacams.com that was vastly different from a numismatic database. A woman was sorting a massive collection of vintage stamps while wearing a tight tweed blazer. The worldwide chat was tipping to guess the country of origin before she stripped off the blazer. What caught my eye was the surprisingly meticulous way she handled the fragile stamp tweezers. I enjoyed the sophisticated, collector-focused atmosphere that made me feel like I was at an international…
