Women’s Aid ABCLN Celebrate Volunteers’ Achievements

Women’s Aid staff and volunteers from Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey gathered together at the Carrickfergus office on Wednesday 6th June, to celebrate Volunteers’ Week by acknowledging the past year’s achievements by local volunteers.

Area Manager Rosemary Magill MBE,  thanked the wide range of volunteers gathered on the evening for their sustained support:

‘Over the past 14 years that Women’s Aid has been in existence in this area, volunteers have been the lifeblood of the organisation.  From the voluntary management committee, which steers the organisation, to the volunteers who give up time to organise and take classes, help out in our centres, support women who are going to court, work with the women and children staying in refuge and raise the funds that are crucial to sustaining our organisation, all services Women’s Aid provide benefit from the contribution made by volunteers’.

Amongst the volunteers enjoying the event was 13 year old Courtney McLaughlin, who raised £161.50 from her 8 hour sponsored silence – quite an achievement from the normally chatty girl!

Carrickfergus business,  Tru Colours Hair Bar were also thanked for the contribution from their very successful fashion show, which raised over £5,000 for the charity.  The local fundraisers were recently Highly Commended regionally for this achievement.

Rosemary Magill also read out some of the letters received thanking volunteers for their contribution – including one from the Prime Minister, David Cameron’s office and another from First Minister Peter Robinson, congratulating the volunteers from Women’s Aid ABCLN for their recent accolade; a Queen’s Jubilee MBE, awarded to volunteers at Buckingham Palace just last week.
