Students from St. Louis Grammar Ballymena celebrate £3,000 donated to Women’s Aid ABCLN through Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI)

St. Louis Grammar (Year 10) students took part in the YPI competition, researching the needs of their local community and selecting a charity to support and then deliver a presentation. Women’s Aid Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne & Newtownabbey (ABCLN) was the nominated charity who received the £3,000.

Ella May and Emily from the winning group explained ‘We have worked very closely with Women’s Aid volunteering. We wanted to raise awareness on Domestic Violence and the impact this can have on children and young people’s education.’

Ruth Owen Fundraising coordinator for Women’s Aid ABCLN ‘The Make It Better Appeal has been set up to support children and young people whose education has been affected by domestic violence. We would like to thank the students from St. Louis Grammar for their involvement with the appeal and the £3,000 is a massive contribution to the appeal in helping to sustain these vital services’.

The funds donated will help to provide emotional and practical support to children and young people whose education has been affected by domestic violence. Constant change, disruption and violence in a young person’s life can make school a real challenge and diminish their ability to engage. Young people are the hidden victims of domestic violence and are significantly at risk of school dropout, exclusion and risk taking behaviours.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence can also access support by calling the 24hr Domestic & Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 802 1414.
