Carrickfergus Area Highlight Personal Support For Victims of Domestic Abuse

25 November, 2012

Fifty men and women from across the Carrickfergus area have added their names to Women’s Aid ABCLN White Ribbon Campaign, pledging ‘never to commit, condone or stay silent on violence against women’.

Staff within the Carrickfergus office have been gathering the signatures of many of the people they work with in the community, from PSNI, Churches, Council and Schools, to add to their ‘White Ribbon Charters’ to demonstrate their support.

The White Ribbon Campaign is an international campaign, started by men who believed more should be done to highlight their condemnation of violence against women.  Women’s Aid in ABCLN have supported the campaign since 2008, when the original 100 Champions, 99 men and 1 woman,  signed up to support the organisation’s aim to speak out about violence perpetrated against women in the home.  It is part of the planned events organised during ‘The 16 Days of Action’ which runs every year from 25th November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women until 10th December, International Human Rights Day.

As well as gathering the signatures across the 5 offices, the organisation has also secured the support of Northern Ireland’s MLAs.  This Charter will be presented to the Assembly at a reception in Parliament Buildings on 28th November 2012, with a copy displayed in Women’s Aid Ballymena office.  The 5 Area Charters will also be displayed in each area office, with the aim that every woman and child who use the organisation will see for themselves the level of support that exists for them to live their lives free from violence.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence can also access support by calling the 24hr Domestic Violence Helpline on 0800 917 1414.
